Queen Victoria gets startled

Queen Victoria had an "unpleasant experience" on the evening of August 5, 1890. At 7 p.m., she left Osborne House on the Isle of Wight for a carriage ride to view the yacht squadron parade at Cowes. The carriage had to cross a ferry on a pontoon. Unfortunately, the carriage was let down too quickly on the pontoon, which caused a rush of water, and the pontoon was partially submerged. Panic set in - from the queen down to the spectators -- but thankfully the pontoon soon righted itself. "The Queen was then conveyed safely to her destination."
