Neither can remarry in the church, but there is nothing stopping a civil marriage (or an annulment). The Catholic church holds little sway these days in Spain. More than 60% of marriages in Spain end in divorce. The church has no real power in Spain anymore. Now, she is working solely for the Aga Khan Foundation. <br />It has been said those days in the media, to my surprise, that Elena and Jaime are not actually divorced, just separated. <br />In Spain, divorce and separation have the same legal effects, are technically the same, except of course that divorced couples can remarry, and the separated ones, not.
