'Mr Peter Phillips, the son of HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, and Ms Harriet Sperling, daughter of the late Mr Rupert Sanders and Mrs Mary Sanders of Gloucestershire, have today confirmed their official engagement.

Both families were informed jointly of the announcement and were delighted with the wonderful news of their engagement. Their Majesties The King and Queen,  The Prince and Princess of Wales have been informed of the announcement. No date has been officially set for the wedding."

This will be the second marriage for both.  Peter's marriage to Canadian Autumn Kelly was dissolved by divorce in 2021.   Harriet was married to Antonio St. John Sperling, the son of Sonia Anne Sperling.  He was born in November 1981 and registered as Antonio St. John di Martino.  Sonia married Domenico di Martino in July 1981.

A lovely manor for a Princess

original painting by Julian Barrows

Discovered this Christmas card in an album.  It was sent to me some years ago -- the 80s -from John Ambler and Princess Margaretha  (of Sweden).  Margaretha is the eldest sister of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

The painting shows John Ambler and Princess Margaretha with their three children, Sybilla, Edward, and James.

John and Margaretha married in 1964.  They separated in 1994, but never divorced.

Ambler bought Chippinghurst Manor in 1964.  Financial problems forced the British businessman to sell the property in 1985 for £1.3 million.

For more than 30 years, Princess Margaretha has lived near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.  On October 31st, she will celebrate her 91st birthday.

Hereditary Prince Philip and his son, Prince Stefan visit Hilander Monastery

PRINCE PHILIP AND PRINCE STEFAN IN HILANDAR, HEREDITARY PRINCE, SENT A MESSAGE OF UNITY AND RESPONSIBILITY

Belgrade, 28 July 2025 - HRH Hereditary Prince Philip and HRH Prince Stefan are visiting Holy Serbian Imperial Lavra, the Hilandar Monastery. This is the third visit to the monastery of the Hereditary Prince, and the first time that his son is visiting. It is the first time in history that two generations of descendants of the Supreme Leader Karađorđe are together in this Sanctuary. HRH Crown Prince Alexander, the Head of the Royal Family, has also stayed in Hilandar three times.

Their Royal Highnesses were welcomed by the Most Reverend Archimandrite Metodije with the brotherhood of this holy family. On the first day of the visit, 26 July, the Abbot and the honourable brotherhood served a memorial service for Supreme Leader Karađorđe on the occasion of his brutal murder, as well as for all deceased members of the Royal Family. As Hereditary Prince pointed out, “that prayer was more than a memory, it was a vow that we pass on from generation to generation.”

From the Holy Serbian Imperial Lavra, Heeditary Prince Philip sent the following message of unity, a reminder and a call for responsibility and dignity:

"While staying with my son Stefan at Hilandar Monastery, a place where for centuries passions have quietened and faith and unity have been preserved, I feel a duty to address all citizens of Serbia.

We live in a time when inner peace is more needed than ever, not as silence imposed by fear or force, but as the result of justice, responsibility, and mutual respect. A society is not built by turning one another into targets, but by resolving differences through free institutions, where personal or party interests do not override the common good.

Responsibility is the highest form of service. Politics, as the most visible expression of public life, must reflect maturity. Those who hold public office, or aspire to, whether in government or opposition, must now show themselves worthy of the weight of that calling.

As a Serbian Prince and member of the Royal Family, I do not belong to any party, nor do I support any political option. It is my duty to remind people of the values that transcend daily politics: the rule of law, freedom of the press, the strength of institutions, and the dignity of every individual. In this, I see the role of the Crown, which remains a symbol of our state, not to divide but to unite.

Our special attention is directed towards the young people who are the future of our country and of the world. Their voice, their hope, and their struggle deserve to be heard. They are not asking for privileges; they are asking for the chance to stay, to build, and to live in a country where honest work is valued and where justice applies equally to all.

The unity I speak of begins at the table of every family, where bread, concern, and the hope for a more secure, dignified, and just future are shared.

All of us, without exception, are called to demonstrate the maturity that this socio-political moment demands. Only in this way can we preserve what is most precious: unity, dignity, and faith in Serbia’s future.

All photos courtesy of HRH Crown Prince Alexander

The entire Royal House, led by my father, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander II, and I, as the Hereditary Prince of the dynasty founded by Karađorđe the Supreme Leader, will always stand by Serbia and all its citizens, never by political parties or politicians, always above political organizations and politicians, but we will always call for and appeal to responsibility, dignity, and the interest of the state and all its people, especially those who are disenfranchised, oppressed, or endangered."

May future generations of Karađorđe's descendants, in peace and freedom, return to Hilandar with the same pride, faith, and love for their homeland. May they, like HRH Prince Stefan, now in his seventh year, and like his father, grandfather, and great-great-great-grandfather, HM King Peter I, feel the depth of the spirituality of Hilandar, the fortress of our faith, culture, and historical memory.

It's a girl for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster

“The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are thrilled to announce the birth of their baby daughter,” a spokesperson for the couple said.

“Both the duchess and Cosima are doing well.

“The duke and duchess now look forward to spending this special time together as a family.”

Lady Cosima Florence Grosvenor was born on July 27 in a London hospital.   This is the first child for the duke and duchess.

Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster, and Olivia Grace Henson were married on June 7, 2024, at Chester Cathedral.

While some speculate that the Prince of Wales could be asked to be the godfather,  I am considering the possibility that the duke's maternal first cousin, Cosima Poloniecki (nee Crawley), could be named as one of the godparents.  Cosima is one of three children of Marita Phillips and her late first husband, Aiden Crawley.

Marita is one of Natasha, Duchess of Westminster's older siblings.  They are the children of the late Georgina Wernher, one of Queen Elizabeth's lifelong friends, and Harold Phillips.

Unfortunately, a girl cannot inherit the dukedom.  If the Duke and his wife do not have any sons, the title will become extinct following the present duke's death.

Ella Mountbatten to marry Fergus Wright

Lord Ivar Mountbatten's Instagram account

Last weekend, Ella Mountbatten and her boyfriend, Fergus Wright, were guests at the wedding of her cousin, Isabella (Bizzy) Arnott, to Angus Oliver.   When it was time for the bride to throw her bouquet to the single ladies, Ella got in line, and as soon as the bouquet hit the air, she was the first out of the post—and grabbed it.  She was congratulated by her cousin.  If you catch the bridal bouquet, tradition states that you will be the next to marry.

Earlier today on Instagram, Lord Ivar Mountbatten announced his eldest daughter, Ella's engagement to Fergus Wright, Marketing Manager at Sky Sports Racing.

Lord Ivar is the younger son of the late David, 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, and Janet Bryce.  On April 23, 1994, he married Penelope Vere Thompson at the Church of St Peter and St. Paul in Clare, Suffolk.

They had three daughters, Ella, Alexandra, and Louise, before divorcing in 2011.  In 2018, he married James Coyle, a director of airline cabin services.

Among the guests at Lord Ivar's wedding were Prince Edward and his girlfriend, Sophie Rhys-Jones, and Princess Margaret.

Ella Louise Georgina Mountbatten was born on March 20, 1996, at Rosie Maternity Hospital, a part of Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.  The hospital was not far from their home, Moyns Park.   Lord and Lady Ivar, along with their newborn daughter, were profiled in the May 11, 1996, issue of Hello magazine.   The presentation took place on her parents' second wedding anniversary.

Lord Ivar told the magazine: "The birth was not how I imagined it would be at all. On television you see hundreds of people around a table wearing green masks but it was very intimate with just Penny, the midwife and I."

He "helped to deliver Ella and cut the umbilical cord. When I saw her appear, it was amazing-- not so much a shock, but a revelation."

Her baptism took place in the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace in June 1996..  Prince Edward is one of her godparents.  Sophie Rhys-Jones also attended the baptism, "who managed to squeeze time between two business meetings to attend the christening."

Ella was named after her great-great-aunt, Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia, also known as Ella.  The Grand Duchess was born Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and By Rhine and was a younger sister of Princess Victoria of Hesse and By Rhine, who was Lord Ivar's great-grandmother.   "My daughter's second name, Louise, " said Lord Ivar "was after Queen Louise of Sweden, who was my grandfather's and Lord Louis Mountbatten's sister.

"We have also called her Georgina after my first cousin, Lady Kennard, who is the mother of the Duchess of Westminster and the Duchess of Abercorn."

[Actually, first cousins once removed, as Georgina Wernher and David, 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven, were first cousins.   https://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/2011/05/georgina-lady-kennard.html ]

After the ceremony, Lady Ivar (as Penny was then styled) spoke to Hello magazine: "It was a simple and very relaxed ceremony, and Ella was a little dream.  She only cried when  the Rev [William] Booth wiped the water from her little forehead, and the rest of the time she slept soundly."

The post-christening luncheon was held in the Palace's Armoury room. The meal was prepared by Moyns Park's chef de cuisine Rosemary Schraeger.  At the time, Lord and Lady Ivar ran their 15th-century home as a corporate venue.

Ella's grandfather, the 3rd Marquess, was also baptized in St. James's Chapel, which was also where the 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven married Countess Nada Torby in 1916.

St. James's Palace was "the perfect place for a christening, full of history and yet very much linked with the family.  Because it was so private, it was a very relaxed day and everyone enjoyed themselves in such beautiful surroundings."

https://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/2012/11/grand-duke-michaels-daughter-marries.html

In 1997, Lord Ivar sold Moyns Park, near Birdbrook, Cambridge, for approximately £4 million.  As Lady Ivar was expecting their second child,  she and her husband had "struggled to keep Moyns Park going by running an entertainment business from the house."

They purchased Bridwell Park, a 173-acre estate near Tiverton, Devon.  The couple's two younger daughters, Alexandra and Louise, were born at Bridwell Park.   Lord Ivar and his older brother, George, now the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, inherited the estate from their mother's first cousin, Ivar Bryce.   In 1991, Lord Ivar bought his brother's share of the property.

For several years, Ella and her sisters joined their parents on the balcony with the Royal Family following the Trooping of the Colour.

In 2014, Ella, then 18, was presented at the Le Bal in Paris.  The debutante ball was held on November 29 at the Palais de Chaillot.

She was not the first member of her extended family to be presented at the ball. Lady Amelia Windsor and Ella's first cousin, Lady Tatiana Mountbatten, had been presented at earlier Le Bals.

Ella told Hello magazine that the ball was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not many people are able to experience."   Her debutante gown was made by Ralp & Russo Couture, and she wore Bucherer jewelry."

Her cavalier was Prince Henri of Bourbon-Parma.  Ella said she looked forward to meeting the young Prince, who has since married Archduchess Gabriella of Austria.

At the time, Ella, who had recently finished school, was living with her paternal grandmother, Janet, Marchioness of Milford Haven, in Chelsea.  "Recently, when I went out to a club at 11:30 p.m., on a Saturday night, she told me off and said it would be a scandal. I had to tell her that no one knows who I am, and everyone goes out late these days. She was very shocked."

In the same interview, she said she was "very interested in the family history and both my father and grandmother spend a lot of time telling me about it. It's very complicated and I struggle to remember it all, but it is very fascinating."

She had earned three A+ levels and planned to attend the University of Bristol to study psychology.

The following year, the family, including Lord and Lady Milford Haven, Lady Tatiana Mountbatten, Lord Ivar and his three daughters, visited Bergstadt Battenberg, the source for the title created for Countess Julie von Hauke following her marriage to Prince Alexander of Hesse and By Rhine.  This marriage was morganatic, and their male line descendants were not entitled to Alexander's title or status.  In 1851, Alexander's brother, Grand Duke Ludwig III, created Julie as Countess of Battenberg. The countly title was also used by their children until 1858, when Ludwig elevated Julie and her children to the status of Prince/ess of Battenberg with the style of Serene Highness.

Julie's son, Prince Louis, married his first cousin, once removed, Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine.  He served in the Royal Navy and became a naturalized British citizen.  In 1917, the family renounced their German titles.  The new family name was Mountbatten. In 1917, Louis was created the 1st Marquess of Milford, Earl of Medina, Viscount Alderney.

She also spent some time working as a professional model during her time at the University of Bristol.

In 2017, with the support of his family, Lord Ivar came out as gay.  He told the Mail on Sunday: "Being a Mountbatten was never the problem.  It was the generation into which I was born.  When I was growing up, it was known as 'the love that does not speak its name,' but what's amazing now is how far we have all come in terms of acceptance.

"In an ideal world, I know the girls would like their mother and father still to be together, but they love their 21st-century family, that we have built, too.  Their father has a boyfriend.  It's that complicated and that simple, but finding James means I will not have to lie to anyone or grow old on my own."

It was Ella nd her two younger sisters who suggested that their mother give their father away when he married James Coyle on September 22, 2018, in a private ceremony at Bridwell Park.

Bridwell Park was sold in 2024.  Lord Ivar and his husband, James, live on a nearby property.

Ella has a BA in Anthropology (First Class Honors) from the University of Bristol.  She is a Brand Partnership Manager with the Hong Kong-based Peninsula Hotels.

Fergus Benjamin Nicholas Wright is the son of Nicholas Richard Wale Wright and Lucinda Clare Benson.  He was born one month before his future wife, on February 20, 1996, at the Rosie Hospital in Cambridge.  His mother, Lucinda, is the daughter of  Robert (Robin) Stephan Benson and Jane Elliot Allday, who served as one of Princess Margaret's ladies-in-waiting from June 26, 1963, through the mid-1990s.

Princess Margaret attended Jane's wedding on July 23, 1964, at St. Luke's, Chelsea.  On October 25, 1965, the Princess returned to St Luke's as one of the godparents of Jane's daughter, infant daughter, Lucinda Clare Benson.

Times, October 26, 1965

Fergus has an MA in Business Marketing from the University of Edinburgh's Business School.  Along with his marketing position with Sky Sports Racing, he is also an Insurance Relationship executive with Miller Insurance Services.

Ella is a descendant of Queen Victoria.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra is in Sydney for three years

all photos Raquel Pires Photography / The Royal Court

In early August, Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra will begin her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sydney, and The Princess has already settled in on campus.

"I am looking forward to starting my studies at the University of Sydney. Being a student will be exciting, and I look forward to gaining new perspectives on both European and international affairs. I am confident that I will learn a great deal," The Princess said.

The Princess will study international relations and political economics.   She will live in student housing.

Ingrid's grandfather, King Harald V, recently told VG newspaper:  "You get this back with compound interest when she gets home, so I think that's just an advantage. She must be allowed to study and get an education before she starts representing."    The princess is not the first Norwegian royal to study abroad.  Her grandfather studied history, economics, and politics at Oxford University's Balliol College. Her father, Crown Prince Haakon, earned a BA in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Science at the London School of Economics.

She is not the first Norwegian royal to study in Australia.   Crown Princess Mette Marit spent six months as an exchange student at Wangaretta High School in Victoria.

An earlier press announcement regarding Princess Ingrid Alexandra's education in Sydney stated:
“Her Royal Highness looks forward to dedicating herself to her studies in the years to come."

It has been noted that she will not undertake any official engagements during her three-year program.

Centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth to be marked by largest exhibition of her fashion ever staged

"The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace                        Spring to autumn 2026

In 2026, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, The King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace will play host to the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of the late Queen’s fashion ever mounted.

Through approximately 200 items, around half on display for the first time, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style will chart the remarkable story of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch through clothing worn in all ten decades of her life: from birth to adulthood, from princess to queen, and from off-duty style to diplomatic dressing for the global stage.

Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion archive is one of the largest and most important surviving collections of 20th-century British fashion and now forms part of the Royal Collection. Alongside clothing, jewellery, hats, shoes and accessories, visitors will discover never-before-seen design sketches, fabric samples and handwritten correspondence that reveal the behind-the-scenes process of dressing the most famous woman in the world and shed new light on the late Queen’s close involvement in the creation of her wardrobe.

@Jon Stokes

@Jon Stokes

@Jon Stokes

An official publication to mark the centenary, Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style, will accompany the exhibition. Written by the exhibition curator Caroline de Guitaut and featuring contributions by fashion experts and designers, the book will explore the late Queen’s fashion archive and her lifelong championing of the British fashion industry in unprecedented detail.

Caroline de Guitaut, exhibition curator and Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art, said: ‘Over the course of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkably long reign, her distinctive style became instantly recognisable around the world, bolstering the British fashion industry and influencing generations of designers and couturiers.

‘Only now, as the late Queen's fashion archive comes under the care of Royal Collection Trust, can we tell the story of a lifetime of thoughtful style choices – from her hands-on role and understanding of the soft power behind her clothing, to the exceptional craftsmanship behind each garment. In the year that she would have turned 100 years old, this exhibition will be a celebration of Queen Elizabeth's uniquely British style and her enduring fashion legacy.’

From birth, Princess Elizabeth’s clothing was a topic of national fascination. On show for the first time will be one of the earliest surviving pieces of couture from her childhood wardrobe: the silver lamé and tulle bridesmaid dress, designed by Edward Molyneux, that she wore aged eight for the 1934 wedding of her uncle, the Duke of Kent, to Princess Marina of Greece.

As British couture rose to prominence in the 1940s, Princess Elizabeth began working with Norman Hartnell, who became her most influential designer over the next three decades. His position as Britain’s leading couturier was cemented when he was chosen to design her wedding dress in 1947 and her Coronation dress in 1953, both of which will be on display.

Eveningwear was a vital component of the Queen’s wardrobe, and visitors will see stunning examples that reflect the evolution of fashion trends throughout her long reign – from the crinoline-skirted gowns of the 1950s by Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies to fluid, vibrantly printed dresses by Ian Thomas that capture the relaxed glamour of the 1970s, on show for the first time.

The exhibition will explore the Queen’s use of diplomatically significant emblems and colours in her wardrobe for overseas tours, as shown in an ingenious white gown designed by Norman Hartnell for a 1961 State Banquet in Karachi, which incorporates Pakistan’s national colours through a dramatic emerald-green pleat cascading down the back.

In her later years, Queen Elizabeth became as recognisable for her off-duty style and classic British tailoring as she was for her couture gowns. From impeccably cut riding jackets to tartan skirts and silk headscarves, visitors will see never-before-displayed examples of her practical everyday style, which continues to inspire contemporary designers to this day."

Dates to be confirmed and tickets to go on sale in November 2025. For updates, sign up to Royal Collection Trust’s e-newsletter at www.rct.uk or follow Royal Collection Trust on social media: Instagram and Facebook: @royalcollectiontrust. X: @RCT.

The official publication Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style will be published by Royal Collection Trust in March 2026, available at £40.00 from Royal Collection Trust shops and www.royalcollectionshop.co.uk, and from all good bookshops.
