Grand Duke of Hesse is ill

March 5, 1892

The Grand Duke of Hesse and By Rhine has suffered a stroke, which has paralyzed the right side of his body, according to a dispatch to the New York Times.  His condition is described as critical.

Ludwig IV  was born on September 12, 1837.  He came to the throne on June 13, 1877, following the death of his uncle, Ludwig III.   On July 1, he married Princess Alice, second daughter of Queen Victoria, who died on December 14, 1878.

The Grand Duke has four daughters and one son.  The eldest daughter, Victoria, is the wife of Prince Louis of Battenberg; the second daughter, Elisabeth, is married to Grand Duke Serge of Russia, while the third daughter, Princess Irene, is married to Prince Henry of Prussia.  The youngest daughter, Princess Alix, 19, is unmarried, as is the Grand Duke's only son and heir, Hereditary Grand Duke Prince Ernst Ludwig, who was born in November 1863.
