Marie, Queen of Romania was an outstandingly beautiful woman. I could never see Victoria Melita as being in this category though. Their mother GD Marie was a pretty woman when she married Prince Alfred and I think they inherited a lot of their looks from her. Fortunately they didn't inherit Queen Victoria's bulbous eyes as their Wales cousins did.
From what I have read about Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, he was obsessed with money and this is probably why he married Marie who had an enormous dowry - I think she bought a million pounds (roubles?) into the marriage, plus fabulous jewels.

Prince Alfred visited Australia in the 1860's and caused an enormous scandal when he associated with a high class prostitute in Melbourne, who later followed him to New Zealand and back to Sydney. There was a failed assassination attempt made on his life in Sydney. Queen Victoria made comment about his immoral behaviour in one of her letters to her daughter.
