German empress near death

December 1, 1920

The Associated Press's correspondent in Doorn confirms that former German Empress Auguste Viktoria "is somewhat better today," but death is expected at "any moment." The AP was able to confirm the reports by telephoning Doorn's mayor, who is in contact with officials at Haus Doorn, where Kaiser Wilhelm II lives in exile.
One resident at Haus Doorn told the AP reporter: "Her Majesty, realizing the seriousness of her condition, is quite resigned, and actually longs for the end of her sufferings, which began in 1918."
Although she is very weak, the Empress was able to talk with her daughter, the Duchess of Brunswick, and with Pastor Dryander, who was the Imperial family's chaplain.
