Young king meets grandmother in London

October 10, 1934

Eleven-year-old King Peter of Yugoslavia, who succeeded to the throne yesterday following the assassination of his father, Alexander, is now in London with his grandmother, the Dowager Queen Marie of Roumania. The new king and his grandmother left London's Ritz Hotel and were "spirited into Paris" with the greatest secrecy and surrounded security. Queen Marie and Peter got off the train at Saint-Denis and were driven into Paris to a "secret location."

It is expected that Peter will join his mother tomorrow. Thousands of people, including French and Yugoslav officials, had been waiting at Paris' main train station and were surprised when they learned that the king was not on the train.

According to press reports, King Peter does not yet know how his father died. He was told that King Alexander died in an accident, and not by an assassin's bullet. Queen Marie of Yugoslavia will remain in Paris to undergo surgery, which had been planned in advance, and "apparently cannot be cancelled."
