Queen Mary moves into new home

October 1, 1936

Queen Mary moved into her new home, Marlborough House. The widow of George V, as tradition dicates, has left Buckingham Palace, where she lived for more than 25 years. "Emotion struggled between tears and a faint, wistful smile," as the mother of Edward VIII, stood "proudly erect, a stately figure in black," stepped into a royal limousine. Accompanied by the king, Queen Mary was driven the short distance down the Mall to Marlborough House. King Edward VIII remained with his mother for some time, as her personal standard was raised on the flag pole above Marlborough. Queen Mary is the second dowager queen to live in the palace. Queen Alexandra moved back into Marlborough House after the death of King Edward VII in 1910.
King Edward VIII returned to Buckingham Palace, "lone master of his household destiny."
The Chicago Daily Tribune also reports that that there is a "possibility of an unofficial American hostess" at the Palace has engaged Mayfair. The American in question is the "vivacious, dark-eyed Mrs. Ernest (Wallis) Simpson, who recently accompanied the 42-year-old king on his recent six-week Adriatic cruise. Shortly before the cruise, the Court Circular listed Mrs. Simpson as an official guest at one of the king's dinners.
The newspaper article includes a photo of the king and Mrs. Simpson, which was taken during their cruise.

US papers with information about Mrs. Simpson are not allowed into the United Kingdom.
