Wilhelmina celebrates 40 years on the throne

September 5, 1938. Wilhelmina was only ten years old when she succeeded to the throne in 1890. But her reign did not start until she reached her majority when she turned eighteen.
"God spare our queen for the house of Orange and our fatherland," proclaimed Amsterdam's burgomaster, welcoming the queen into the city. Queen Wilhelmina celebrated her 58th birthday a week ago.
